Icelanders started curling in 1996, establishing a curling branch within Skautafélag Akureyrar, the local Skating Club in Akureyri at the northern part of Iceland. First years there were only a few sessions every season - on the outside ice. In March 2000, a new Arena was opened and curling has shared the ice with hockey and figure skating (and sometimes horses) ever since, practicing and playing late Monday and Wednesday nights.
Every spring, at the end of April and/or beginning of May, Akureyri Curling Club hosts a bonspiel called Ice
